President Kees opened the meeting at 6:30 pm. After the national anthem, grace, and dinner, plus thanking the ACW for the dinner, Kees started the meeting.
Program:
1. Paul introduced his speaker
Liam Duffy was our participant in the 2022 virtual Adventures in Citizenship (AIC)
Liam used a PowerPoint presentation to talk about his experience in the Zoom meeting, that lasted over 4 days
Friday, May 27th to Monday, May 30th, hosted by the Rotary Club of Ottawa
On day 1, Heather Taylor: Co-Chair of Adventure In Citizenship welcomed them and taught them the 4-Way Test and how to play “Adventure Of Royal” AKA (Rock, Paper, Scissors)
They also met Che Weist, President of Rotary Ontario
On day 2, they met Greg Smith who talked about Indigenous people and told the AIC 70 participants that “Residential Schools taught math/science but not love”
They then met Candice Metallic, a Lawyer (practicing law for 25 years)
She defends Indigenous issues and gave them some basic facts about First Nation, Metis, and Inuit peoples in Canada, who speak 56 to 70 indigenous languages
The Indian Act is the oldest piece of legislation in Canada
Day 3, The Right Honorable Joe Clark, Former Prime Minister of Canada and a past AIC member
Liam was most impressed with this quote from his presentation: “I’m at a point in my life where I can comment on what happened in the past, while you are at a point where you can make a difference”
Gary J. Smith discussed “Diplomacy On Ice”
He was a Diplomat at the 1972 Canada vs USSR Hockey Summit Series
He talked about the difficulties in Russia and who won the series
Day 4, Chris d’Entremont, MP, Deputy Speaker for the House Of Commons
First Acadian from Nova Scotia to be the speaker of the House Of Commons
He explained the duties of the Deputy Speaker
Marie Seneca-Tremblay lead them in the 1st reaffirmation for the AIC using the new words
They sang “O Canada” and said the “Oath of Citizenship”
What he liked the most were Prime Minister Joe Clark, Gary J Smith, and the House of Commons and Canadian Citizenship sessions
What he liked the least was sitting at his computer for 7 hours a day
Liam thanked the Ridgetown Rotary Club for sponsoring his participation
Liam answered a few questions
Paul thanked Liam and had him sign 3 Town Library books
NOTE: The information for the 2023 AIC arrived this week. Kees has agreed that we would participate, so Paul has filled out the participation form and Warren will mail the registration fee, $750. It is from May 14-17 2023
2. Kees: Update on Polio Plus (Polio plus Society)
Kees discussed the email from Ken Corlett, originally sent to all members with Kees’ agenda for this meeting
Ken is D. 6380 Polio Plus chair
There is a form to fill out of your wish to contribute
3. Kees: Santa Claus parade
Jeff will accompany Kees when they pick up the Rotary wheel wagon from Dresden
Several members volunteered to put on decorations at Reinout’s
The parade is at 1:00 pm on Dec 10 (when Kiwanis hold the Santa Claus parade)
Scouts and Cubs may sit on the wagon
Kees suggested looking into buying an inflatable Rotary Wheel
3. Kees: Christmas Party, Dec. 5th
The Christmas dinner is at the Hall
Kees needs to know how many people, including guests, are coming, by Dec. 2nd
Paul will again be getting chocolate for the party
David K is getting together some form of Christmas game
Correspondence:
1. Paul: Ridgetown Figure Skating Club’s request
We received a request from the club for financial help
After a short discussion:

Other:
1. Ron B: President-Elect for 2023-24
Ron discussed our need for an incoming President for 2023-24
He thanked those who have agreed to fill other positions for that year
He feels that everyone is capable of doing the job, as it is only for one year
Another club or two has tried having a couple of members share the position
This is something he feels we can discuss at the Dec. 19th meeting
Bob suggested that we should have a separate meeting to discuss just this idea
President Kees asked if there was “Anything for the good of Rotary?”
Kees closed the meeting at 7:50 pm.
