Program: Tilbury Co-President Kathy Cottingham introduced the guest speaker Lee Halsted and his wife from a Michigan club. Lee is the incoming 6380 District Governor, in 2026-27
Lee spoke about the Peace Pole but also covered several other topics dealing with Rotary’s Peace initiative
He titled his talk “Peace on the Road’ and this was the first one of many he will give throughout the district
In 1921, RI identified “understanding, goodwill and peace” as a primary objective
At its 1940 convention, delegates adopted the “Respect for Human Rights Resolution” which was a precursor to the UN’s 1948Universal Declaration to Human Rights”
In 1962, President Kennedy formed the Peace Corp, during the many student riots in the US over the Vietnam war
Peace is one of Rotary’s 7 Pillars
Without pace, there cannot be adequate Food, Water and sanitation, Health Care, Education, Infrastructure, a healthy economy and Individual happiness
He talked about Rotary and The Institute for Economics and Peace and showed a diagram of the 8 Pillars of Positive Peace
Positive Peace describes an optimum environment for human potential to flourish
Each year, Rotary selects up to 100 professionals from around the world to receive fully funded academic fellowships at Rotary Peace Centres
Lee also mentioned the Rotary Action Group for Peace which empowers and supports the peace work worldwide Rotarians by offering structure, guidance resources to further their peace efforts
One way that D 6380 Peace Committee achieves its goals is by Promoting the Proliferation of Peace Poles which we already have in the garden by the Cenotath
Lee encouraged all D.6380 clubs to have Peace Builder clubs within their Interact and Roteract clubs
Peace Poles come in a couple of sizes, with the 5 foot poles having 4 saying in different languages on the 4 sides, and the larger 8 foot poles with 8 sayings
