President Jeff opened the meeting at 6:30 pm. After the national anthem, grace, and dinner, plus thanking the ACW for the dinner, Jeff started the meeting.
Program:
1. Bob introduced our guest speakers, 1st Ridgetown Scout leaders Adam and Angie Frazee and Jake
Singleton.
Since it’s been almost 2 years since they have talked to us, Adam using photos, went through the many activities they have done over this time.
Adam listed a great many, so not all of them are listed here.
They went to the Dorchester camp, in the fall of 2019 where they camped and took part in an amazing number of activities.
They held their last traditional Halloween party at the Ridgetown Scout Hut in 2019 where they had several contests using toilette paper. The 2020 and this year’s Halloween parties are at the Thamesville corn maze.
They visited the Hamilton Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum where they got to camp under the Lancaster bomber, plus sit in various planes that are on display.
The last outdoor camp was at Clearville, in Fab. 2020. It was very cold and snowed overnight.
When COVID hit, they were forced to either do Zoom meetings or have their meetings outside, which they did quite often once they were allowed to meet in person. As an example, at one zoom meeting, they learned how to cook using a coffee cup and a microwave making pizza or brownies.
They went to the woodlot on the Scane Line, across from the golf course quite often. Built shelters and did some night excursions there as well.
In the fall, they went to the CM Wilson Conservation area, for canoeing, etc.
In November 2019 and 2020 they had special presentations on Remembrance Day by Kent May who talked about the Great Escape, a soldier’s life in WW1, and the soldier’s life in 1812. They helped sort toys for “The Gift” at the Scout Hut.
To keep the scouts interested, the leaders came up with all kinds of games.
They earned badges doing various activities, as part of the Great 8 Challenges, which were all done virtually and were hosted by Les Shroud (aka Survivor Man) who showed how he could survive in the wilderness with just whatever he could find.
Once back outside in 2021, they built water filters using a variety of objects, plus many other very neat activities.
Adam also mentioned an app for your phone that describes your position anywhere on earth by using 3 words. It can be found at What3words.com. If you ever need someone to come and get you, you look up where you are and text that location. He suggested we all put it on our phones. They set up courses for the scouts to follow using the app.
Thanks to the generosity of Ridgetown and the area, during the Scouts Seeds fundraising campaign, 1st Ridgetown Scouts were #1 in Canada. The Beavers also won the first week of the Great 8 Challenge beating other units from across Canada.
There was considerable discussion about the 1st Scouts’ use of the Scout Hut. They apparently have a contract for the use of the building from September to July each year. It is hoped that formally having it on the municipality’s books, will dispel some of the false perceptions that “nobody uses the building”. Apparently, the 4-H club as well as the Kiwanis Club has been at a meeting discussing their use of the Hut. The Scout leaders had no knowledge of this meeting.
Adam then put some Rotarians through a challenge involving 8 lines and a can of water.
Jeff thanked Adam for his presentation. Jeff mentioned that he grew up in the scouting movement and it has been a benefit throughout his life.
2. Kees: Update on possible Tree Project participation.
Kees advises that there will be no participation due to a shortage of trees.
3. Ron: Update on Pints for Polio. It is from 5-8 pm. (See more below.)

The musicians will deal with when they will play.
4. Kees: Schedule date for Main St. Corn Stalk Decorations.
Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at 9:00, am, at the Boonzaaier farm, the same farm as last year.
Kees will bring what we need.
5. Jeff: Options for Upcoming Speakers.
Brian has suggested Joan Cofell to talk about banding monarch butterflies.
6. Jeff: Possibly 8 Cars from Kent Historic Auto for Saturday, Oct 2nd, 11-4.
Car Club memo sent 16th September. Three responses so far.
7. Jeff: The next meeting was scheduled for the Oct.11th meeting as that is the Thanksgiving Holiday.
In its place, the meeting will be held on Wednesday the Oct.13th, at Sons of Kent brewery.
Jeff will send out a sign-up sheet.

8. Jeff: Grow Rotary through Each One Bring One by 30 June 2022.
Each Rotarian is to try to bring one new member into Rotary this Rotary year.
9. Jeff received a letter from The Salvation Army requesting support for their annual Christmas campaign. We can discuss this at our Oct. 25, 2021 meeting. We traditionally man a red kettle at the Post office.
President Jeff asked if there was “Anything for the good of Rotary?”
Jeff closed the meeting at 7:50 pm.
The next meeting is on the 25th of October, at the Anglican Church Hall.
