Program:
1. Jeff: Speaker: Special Constable Brenda Koldyk
Brenda Koldyk is married to Rob Koldyk and they have raised three sons in Ridgetown
Special Constable Brenda Koldyk has been a member of the Chatham-Kent Police Service since September 1999
In 2003, she joined the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Section of the Chatham-Kent Police Service to further her interest in educating students, young people, and adults
Special Constable Koldyk feels that one of the main changes in policing is dealing with young offenders
The Youth Criminal Justice Act, YCJA, a federal law dealing with Canadian youth ages 12 to 17 who get into trouble with the law, was enacted in 2003, with amendments in 2012 to strengthen the handling of violent and repeat young offenders
There are several extra-judicial measures that police can follow which Special Constable Koldyk outlined
We also heard about the Careless Driving-Highway Act and Special Constable Koldyk explained what careless driving is, giving several examples, and how the officer stopping the driver may decide what charge should be laid
Dangerous Driving or Dangerous Operations as it is now called has a lot of different types of driving that fall under this act
Impaired Driving covers impairment by alcohol and/or drugs
Again, it is up to the officer who has stopped someone who is impaired to determine through testing how impaired they are and under what substance, be it alcohol, marihuana, or stronger drugs such as LSD, cocaine, fentanyl, methamphetamines
A driver can be charged for operating any vehicle not operated by muscular power, such as planes, tractors, dirt bikes, golf carts motorcycles, cars, and trucks
The age for legal consumption of beer and marihuana is 19, but you cannot have any in your system when driving if you are under 22
Special Constable Koldyk answered many questions and also talked about her vest, which she is always required to wear when in uniform, as she was at our meeting
It weighs about 6 lb. and contains many pockets for various pieces of equipment such as a flashlight and handcuffs
