Ridgetown Scouts Had a good year in 2023-24
At the Sept. 23, 2024 Rotary meeting, Adam, Angie and Alex Frazee and Chief Scout Travis Clark updated the club on the activities of the 1St Scouts over the 2023-24 year. Adam thanked the club for inviting them to the meeting and our continued support. This is a very brief summary of the very busy year the club has had.
They went on a moonlight ride on the Caso trail from Highgate back to the scout hut, with a few blown tires and other breakdowns, a total of 13.1 km and 2:03 hour. Travis organized a Popinjay at the Bothwell Legion where the scouts used a bow and arrow, with a non-pointed tip, to try to knock a pot off a table. The kids built model cars from scratch, and participated in some amazing races. The Ridgetown scouts always clean up in the truck division and overall they win for speed and design. The troop marched in the Remembrance Day parade and placed poppies around the Cenotaph.
A visit to the replicas of the WW1 trenches, which are located somewhere off the Selton line was a truly very impressive tour. Last fall, they helped the Rotary Club and Horticultural Society plant trees on the Memorial Tree Trail, which is an annual event. Their winter camping, in tents, was at Kateraki Camp in Clearview, when it was -17 C. They have ordered 6 new tents, which cost $450 plus another $40 for the tarp for underneath. They learned CPR, with even the Beavers participating, and will hopefully become certified.
Leader David Brian arranged for them to go Dragon Boat racing on the Thames in Chatham; it was suggested that the Rotarians could do that as well! At their first meeting of the year, scouts had indicated that they wanted to go fishing, so in the spring, 25 scouts and leaders went fishing at Erieau and went into the wheelhouse from a Great Lakes freighter that is moored there. Their second annual pancake breakfast in March was fun and once again a very successful fund raiser.
The sleepover at the Ripley’s Aquarium in Toronto was a huge success. They slept in the walkway that goes through the aquarium with the fish swimming over top of them. Adam also noted that Zo Thompson has become the first girl Chief Scout in the Ridgetown 1st Scout troop’s 80+ year history. This troop, with nearly 50 members has been very successful, in part due to the many leaders who have joined. Any youngsters of Ridgetown and the area who might like to join ar
