  • A few other benches need fixing
  • Paul will review and report at the next meeting to them
  • Brian and Reinout suggested that we take them from their present location and do the repairs ourselves
  •  Ron offered to pair one bench
2. Kees: A history of his work in greenhouses
  • Kees gave a wonderful presentation of his time working in greenhouses; what follows in a very brief summary of his presentation
  • The first installation he worked on was in 1966 in Holland and he has worked in greenhouses  for 50 years, in Holland, Canada, the US, and all over the world
  • He explained the symbioses between the earth and the plants
  • He explained how the ethanol plant and the 60 acres of greenhouses across the street, in Chatham, work well together, with the ethanol plant sending its excess heat and the CO2 across the street to the greenhouses
  • Also, when the waste from producing the ethanol is sent back to the farmers to be used as cattle feed
  • Kees then showed us a series of videos on different greenhouses
  • The first was on Mucci Farms, which produces Aquaponic lettuce in greenhouses in Leamington; Kees helped set up the water system
  • Then one covers Hollandia Produce, in Carpinteria, California which starts the lettuce in small containers with peat moss from Canada, which eventually gets them hydroponic lettuce
  • They’ve been in business for 47 years
  • Next, Green Circle Growers in Oberlin, Ohio produce 8,000,000 orchids a year, using as much recycled wood for the heat needed
  • Finally, Kees talked about the tomato production in a greenhouse in the Netherlands, using far less water to produce far more produce
  • As an example, they produce 80 tomatoes in the same space compared to Spain which would produce 4
  • They want to be the educators for the world saying that the way the world’s population is expanding, we must get better at producing food for all these people to eat
  • It was an amazing presentation and it is easy to see why Kees loved his job so much
