1. Program:  Reinout introduced Jim Brown to discuss the Greenwood Cemetery
  • In introducing Jim, he mentioned all of the work that Jim has done in/for the cemetery
  • The cemetery started in 1885, owned by Charles Shaw and James W. Brown
  • After the death of Shaw, ownership passed to B.W. Willson, who held the mortgage
  • In 1907 trustees were appointed who were declared owners of the cemetery
  • In 1913, Greenwood Cemetery Corporation was formed and on June 12th, 1913, ownership passed from Willson to the corporation
  • The Cemetery is licensed to act as a cemetery, with revisions in 1990
  • A cemetery is one such as Greenwood, a graveyard is on a church property
  • Jim went over the many ways that someone can be buried, including when cremated
  • The burial plot is not owned by the person to be buried there: that person owns an “interment right”, in perpetuity, owned by the person purchasing or their heirs
  • Jim also went over the upcoming plans for a site for natural burials on a section of the cemetery where a coffin is not used
  • The body is placed in a shroud or simply placed in the ground with no chemicals used
  • Jim talked about the many rules and internment options and suggested that people do some planning with a local funeral home and perhaps put into their will what they want
  • Jim gave a few of the somewhat humorous stories about things that have happened in the cemetery or to graves sites, often at the hands of relatives who perhaps didn’t get along the deceased
  • Jim mentioned that the Cemetery Board is continually in need of volunteers to help maintain the cemetery or join the Board
  • Jim certainly could have talked for much longer than our meeting time allowed
  • In thanking Jim, the club presented him with a cheque made out to Greenwood Cemetery for $1000
