Meeting Date: April 17, 2023 at the Anglican Hall.
President Kees opened the meeting at 6:30 pm. After the national anthem, grace and dinner, plus thanking the ACW for the dinner, Kees started the meeting.
 
Program:
1. Judie W introduced her speaker, David Maris
  • Dave presented on behalf of Chris Hyatt who was unable to attend as he was wanted at his surprise birthday dinner party
  • Dave is helping Chris set up his storefront on Thames St in Chatham featuring his online
auction house called “Thames Auctions” (www.thamesauctions.hibid.com)
  • He grew up on a farm in Glenwood, spending most of his youth in Kent County
  • Hard work on the farm taught him character, learning much from both his mother and father and grandfather (who fought at Vimy Ridge) and his hardworking grandmother
  • He went to both Fanshawe and St. Clair colleges in the arts and landscaping with on-line education in science, physics and the environment
  • In recent years, he has worked on four continents, lastly living in Switzerland for over 7 years and spending 3-4 months per year in the Netherlands
  • He is presently doing research on military history for a book that he is writing
  • He is presently the owner of Dikkens Den in Ridgetown, which is in the process of being moved to Chatham to the Thames Auctions storefront on Thames St
  • The main focus of Dave’s talk was about on-line auctions
  • He showed how on-line auctions work Ontario.hibid.com
  • Dave explained how using on-line auctions allow people to either buy or sell items on the Thames Auctions site, which can be accessed at thamesauctions@gmail.com
  • Chris H. works compassionately with those whose family member has passed away
  • He helps those wishing to sell all or some of the items left in the house, ensuring that any unsold items are donated to the family’s chosen charitable organization
  • Most auctions have a time limit and the time left on any auction is shown on that auction’s site along with the current bid
  • Items sold can be picked up at the business location or sent to wherever the buyer lives
  • whether across the country and to places across the US, for a shipping fee
  • There is also fee paid to the auction site for selling items
  • Dave had a variety of items from Dikkens Den for our members to see and binders of his landscaping and artwork
  • It was an interesting presentation with much more detail than I have given here
  • Bob thanked Dave for his presentation
  • 2. Kees:  Presenting of the PolioPlus Society Pins by Ken Corlett
  • Ken talked about what our club has done in its Rotary work in the community and through Rotary International
  • Dave McGuire had asked Ken to take over the PolioPlus portfolio which Ken did without hesitation
  • Ken explained exactly what PolioPlus is and that our club is the only club in D6380 that has 100% member participation by contributing $100 US per year
  • Every member received a certificate and pin in recognition of our contribution
  • Ken told us that unfortunately Dave McGuire has passed away on April 16th, 2023
  • Henny gave some details about the funeral arrangements
  • 3. Brian:  Easter Egg Hunt
  • Brian thanked people for the donation goodie bags, toys and money received for the Easter egg hunt from the readers from the Independent News
  • An ad is in the April 19th edition of the Independent thanking all those who donated
  • The bicycle was won by 5 year old Roman Alders from Guelph, who was in Ridgetown while visiting his grandparents in Morpeth

    Correspondence:  Paul read the following letter
    1.   A rep from the Parks, Rec and cemeteries department of C-K
  • It was an invitation to participate in the Pitch-In Week, April 16-22, 2023
  • The envelope had the wrong address, we just got it.
  • Paul will phone and indicate that we do our own road cleanup spring and fall so will not participate in this week’s events as well as giving them our correct mailing address  (Done)

  • Still looking for the organizer from the club
  • We can only call announce the names twice for 50-50 winners for each hourly draw, and if no one claims, draw another name
  • The person who does the music each year has requested $400 for the day, as opposed to the $250 from the past shows and it was agreed that this was acceptable
  • President Kees asked if there was “Anything for the good of Rotary?”
    Kees closed the meeting at 8:10 pm
    The next meeting is on May 1, 2023 with Kees
