Meeting Date:  Christmas Dinner at Dec.4th, 2023 at the Anglican Parish Hall. The gathering began at 5:30 pm with the usual singing of the American and Canadian National anthems and a prayer. The order of tables was done by Ron asking a few Christmas questions. Several women of the ACW prepared a wonderful meal of turkey and ham and all the trimmings, complete with desserts.
Program:  Guest Speaker was Tom Button
1.  The guest speaker for the evening was local historian Tom Button. Complete with a PowerPoint presentation, Tom talked about the difficulties early settlers in the area would have encountered. In the early 18th century, Colonel Talbot, from Ireland, was in charge of assigning parcels of land to those settlers who applied. They were not given title to the land until after 5 years, during which time they had to clear a specific amount of land. One of the interesting parts of Tom’s talk was that to clear the land, they had to burn the trees they cut down since there were no horses or oxen to move them, nor saw mills to turn the logs into timber. That happened many years later. The smoke would have been far worse than that from recent forest fires. There were also hordes of mosquitoes as well as foxes, wolves, bears, racoons and many others “pests”. Tom always gives an excellent talk.
2.   At the meeting as well, two new members were welcomed into the club. David Brian, sponsored by Ben VanHeeswijk and Beatrice Wausi Gedion, sponsored by Henny Boeters were brought into the club. The Ridgetown Rotary club looks forward to having them as members and all that they will be able to contribute to the club.
