Rotary’s June 9, 2025 meeting
On Monday, June 9th, 2025, Rotary’s Adventure in Citizenship students, Kallie Rourke and Lilly Hooper, gave their recount of the 4 day program in Ottawa, using a PowerPoint presentation with many pictures. Both are in grade 11 at RDHS in Science and English. They passed around for members to see their AIC lanyards adorned with many lapel pins received at the conference
Day 1: Ottawa significance.
The Ottawa River was used for lumber and timber transportation and Ottawa is home to Margaret Atwood, Justin Trudeau, Matthew Perry, Sandra Oh and others. They went to the House of Commons Chambers - amazing to sit and listen to the Speaker of the House. Then across the Ottawa River to the Sugar Shack for traditional food tasting and seeing maple syrup production, traditional and modern.
Day 2: Bus trip
The sightseeing around Ottawa included seeing its original arena, some
Embassies and the original Prime Minister’s house. There were presentations by Results Canada and hearing about Advocacy 101 and standing up for one’s issues. Canada is made up of many kinds of people, many different flags. That night was a talent show where students from across the country displayed their entertaining skills.
Day 3: The Museum of History and Citizenship
This focuses on the early 1800’s – 2010, with pop culture, the Blue Nose ship, totem poles and much more. They then had talks on citizenship and its responsibilities. Lastly, a dinner and dance.
Day 4: Canadian Citizenship Ceremony
They watched new Canadians be sworn in as citizens. Then at the final ceremonies, a representative from each province (175 students from all across Canada attended, 63 from Ontario, 2 from Quebec) talked about their AIC experience. That night, both girls stayed with host families, before their long train ride back home. The best part was meeting others from all over Canada all at once. Kallie and Lilly thanked the Club for their amazing experience. Thank you to Kallie and Lilly for their excellent presentation.
