Program: Kees introduced our speaker Beatrice Gideon, on her Chicken project in Kenya
- The chicken raising project is in Mbusyani, Kenya
- It started in Oct. 26th, 2024 with a $1390 CAD grant from our club
- The aim is to boost the income for local families allowing for egg and poultry sales
- It started with the construction of a sturdy and efficient chicken coop safe from animals
- They collected the building materials from around the area
- This was for the foundation and bricks, made locally for walls, wire mesh for the windows and roofing
- There are two areas, one for the chicken and one for the chicks
- The outdoor and inside walls are plastered
- There will be a system for the 150 layers, to be delivered in April 2nd
- Beatrice gave us a full budget breakdown, noting that they spent $479 CAD more than the club gave them
- The next step will be to purchase the chicks and the poultry feeding machine
- Future plans are to make it one of the largest such operations in the region
- It will benefit and improve the livelihood of as many families as possible
- It will be run by a group in the area with the coop built near the school
- They will get training from the government
- Beatrice thanked the club for all of our encouragement and financial support
- In answer to a question, the hope is that other communities may use this project as a guide to set up their own
- There are no Rotary clubs anywhere in the region, the nearest perhaps 600 miles away
- Once each chicken has produced 300 eggs, they will then be made into soup
- Several good suggestions were made, such as controlling lice in the chickens
